The Kids’ Right to Read Project persuaded the Prosser School District outside Yakima, WA to keep Dave Pelzer’s A Child Called “It” in their school libraries. The controversy arose over a high school history teacher’s objections to the portrayal of child abuse and the use of profanity in Pelzer’s book. The same teacher also tried to ban Amy Ignaltow’s The Popularity Papers due to a depiction of a two father household which he claimed promoted “the homosexual agenda”. The wonderfully worded letter to the board signed by Chris Finan, Joan Bertin and Charles Brownstein can be viewed on the National Coalition Against Censorship website.
